| After reviewing some clips from Revenge of the Nerds today, I joined a fraternity.
I need to let that sink in.
Finally tiring of my unambitious friends that I essentially made during opening weekend freshmen year, I sought something greater than just a bunch of guys with whom I could play SSBM. They're good guys, but I just can't stay idle. This fraternity has been stalking me for about a year so far, on and off. Last Fall, I couldn't give them the kind of attention they deserved, but I did some research and espionage to learn more about them. They have an excellent reputation for being gentlemen and scholars. And in person, they lived up to such hype while still being a lot of fun. And so, now I am a member of the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity. Hey, if they can form a fraternity in Revenge of the Nerds and not lose their nerd identity, then certainly I can join one.
Also, Concrete Canoe and Steel Bridge still reign my schedule.
| It's been a very interesting summer, but with the completion of my last 3 summer classes, it's drawing to a close. As far as these classes went, it felt like a regular semester. I learned lots of interesting engineering ideas, and succeeded in crafting a few of my own. I'm pretty sure that I'll be holding onto the golden GPA for at least another semester; my graduate school applications in coming years will thank me for it. Which schools will receive applications I still don't know. I may be gutsy enough to try MIT, but Cornell can still suck on some dingly danky donkey balls (it's a term of endearment, I assure you).
Much more...discovery, occurred outside of classes this summer for me. Would you believe that I went to a concert almost every Friday night this summer? Oh, and I ate out at least 3 times a week, without gaining weight (I suspect there's a parasite eating up all of my meals). And yet, I maintained my character (most of the time) for who I am. My lab coat is still dirty from abuse in the materials lab, but my tongue is still reeling from when I became hungry enough to try asparagus.
But as this Fall is revving up, new things are starting up all around me. New people, new ideas, and new resources...are all about to be absorbed by the same old DVB, except, this time with nukes.
| It was about that time of the year. Time for a rousing game of Civilization with the usual gang of idiots. I cleared my friday night schedule of seeing the Beatles cover band or doing anything sensible. Instead, I made the trek back to Mentor in my decrepit van. 10 minutes before making it home, the brake light came on (previously the brakes simply sucked, but with some functionality). Add to this that one of the front headlights is now missing and it's not looking good for that vehicle. It stayed home.
Anyway, the civ board came busting out almost on schedule. The attendance was less than hoped for, but that's generally how it works. But a paltry 3 hours later, our less than interested and very brown friend Haroon decided to leave. That effectively ended what had been the most pathetic game of civilization that I've ever played. Last time we played, it took about 6 hours and we actually finished. We couldn't even eliminate any players this time, much as we tried. What a waste.
I did, however, manage to finally see Old School, as well as Clerks 2. Both are excellent movies. If you've seen most of the other Kevin Smith movies, then you should see Clerks 2.

| After the awesome theater experience, this week has been aggravating as hell. Classmates, coursework, and the rec center folk have just been getting on my nerves. Fortunately, things started to improve when my friend Lisa (a theoretical mathematician even) offered me some delicious chocolate rice pudding japanese things.
But despite a wavering mood, I've been productive. That spear which I had spent so much time designing only took about 2 hours time to actually build. I gave it one trial run at the rec center which went well, but today they decided that I couldn't bring it in. You know, because my 7 lb dull spear in my arm is definitely more dangerous than a weighted dumb bell in the hands of some juiced up maniac.

The total length is about 8 ft, but it feels like 20 when I'm whipping it around. If you look closely, you might be able to spot the one change that was made in the As-Built from the original design.
I'm just going to cool off for now. Maybe, gasp, watch some tv.
| "Much Ado About Nothing" is an absolutely amazing play by Shakespeare. Yes, thank you for that large money bag of bribe. But it really was awesome enough for me to have to see at least the remainder of his comedies. The slapstick hilarity of the 3 stooges, yet the educated wisdom of Virgil. Astounding.
This totally has nothing to do with me thinking that character of Beatrice is a blazing gem of beauty.
